Voodoo Dolls - Not What You Think!

Fran Carey

Books and movies have taught us to associate cloth figures with voodoo, but poppets are much more than something for fictional villains to use to cause trouble and move the plot along.  Traditions all over the world have used models of humans for healing, fertility, and other forms of magic for centuries.  Whether sticks, clay, bread dough, or cloth, these avatars can be used to hold and carry magic from one person to another, or can stand in for yourself, externalizing your wishes.

Our subconscious speaks in symbols, not words, and this is one aspect of how dolls are used.  If you make a doll that looks like you, and put something of yourself in it, hair, nail clippings, even spit, you can then use that doll to make changes to your energy.  You might want to give it a pocket or purse full of money, to put Health Oil on your sore knee, to put a little rose quartz where your heart is to help you feel more love and compassion for the world at large.

You can also use the doll as a symbol of someone else.  Put the Health oil on a doll to represent your mother, to help with her arthritis.  Wrap your least favorite politician in yards and yards of packing tape to bind him or her from doing harm.  Make a poppet of the world and stuff its insides with rose quartz, rose buds, jasmine, and Divine Love incense.

A note on magical ethics.  It is considered black magic and generally rude to attempt to influence someone else without their knowledge and permission.  So in reality the above example of Mom is okay if she's okay with it, but binding your least favorite politician is not.  It may be worth the cost to save the world, though.  And remember, that which you do comes back three times to you.

To create a poppet for magic, the most basic way is to make or purchase a human shaped cloth pillow then personalize it.  Draw or sew clothes similar to those for whom it will stand in, or write their name on it.  Inside, put hair, nail clippings, or some other former piece of the person, along with stones or herbs to go with the magic you plan to do.  Once the doll is stuffed, sew it shut, focusing on the magic you are sewing in.  Then hold the doll in your hands for at least 30 minutes while again focusing on the desired outcome.  Now put the doll in a safe place and prepare for the magic to work.

Once the spell is done, dispose of the doll by burning, burying, or in running water.  If you need an ongoing spell, such as for healing, you can refresh it by adding more herbs or oils and repeating the focused intention.

Healing and working magic with clay, wax, and other materials made to resemble human beings dates back to Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.  Despite their modern reputation for use only to do evil and cause harm, poppets and dolls are a very traditional way to heal or protect yourself or your loved ones.  So simple to make or personalize, take advantage of this proven magical method.
