Seeking Light through Dark Goddesses

Fran Carey

Feminine energy has been portrayed as the dark side of the coin, the yin to the yang of masculinity.  In popular media, women, especially those who want to control their own destiny, are often shown as evil, thoughtless, heedless of consequences, and a threat to those around them.  Those known as dark goddesses give us an alternative to this way of seeing.  They guide us to connect with our girl power without worrying what others think.

The archetype of the dark goddess is found around the world.  Hekate, aka Hecate, from Greece, goddess of the crossroads and magic, initiatrix into witchcraft in the modern day, and depicted in many surviving artifacts from antiquity.  Hel of the northern lands, daughter of Loki the trickster, ruler of the underworld to which went those who did not die in battle, and keeper of the dark runes, holding them until the gods are reborn after Ragnarok.  The Morrigan, Celtic goddess of the battlefield, dispenser of victory.  Kali, slayer of demons in Hindu teachings, the only reason the world survived for humans to be born.  Each of these provide an indispensable service to their worshippers and to the rest of humankind.

Worship of and cocreation with the dark goddesses is alive and well today, as it should be in this era in which the energy of women and the Divine Feminine is a source of great fear to the patriarchy.  Accessible to any human, the dark goddesses offer protection, self-knowledge, and acceptance of self, including one's shadow side.  Knowing and accepting the unpleasant bits of one's self make one's ego less in charge, so one can act rather than react when adversity arises, especially if one's sense of self is threatened by outer society.

Discovering goddess energies within can help you stand up for yourself and your rights, protect your family, and maintain your self-esteem and see and follow your path in life.  We can take courage and inspiration from their journeys and struggles, and relax in the knowledge that powers older than the world have our backs.  Explore the powers and wisdom of the dark goddesses and own it within yourself.  Don't let anyone tell you that you don't have the right and obligation to be who you are.
