Grim What?
Fran CareyShare
The dreaded magical book. Used in countless horror movies and shows, and in multiple fantasies as well, this is one of the most common images associated with witchcraft and Wicca. But what is it really?
A grimoire is a Book of Shadows, a book of spells or a magical diary kept by an individual or a group. A cookbook of sorts, with instructions for more than just sugar cookies. It is one of the first things most witches in training are told to do, so they can record their successes and failures as they learn to do spells. You can read an article on creating your own here: Your Book of Shadows – Goddess Isis Books & Gifts
There are many collections of spells on the market, the tried and true experiments of those who have gone before, sometimes containing the word "spells" in the title, sometimes "grimoire", and sometimes none of the above. There are many from folk magic traditions and magical trads other than wicca, as well.
Ritual magick practitioners also use grimoires and have a long history of publishing books of spells themselves, some tracing back literally hundreds of years, such as the Grimoire of Pope Honorius, or the Red or Green Grimoires, all of which available on line. This tradition has given birth to some of the most notorious, as many historical magicians purported to work with demons, daimons, and elementals.
Some books are highly specific, concentrating on magic for love, money, protection, or spells from specific traditions. Some are more general, such as Crowley and Mathers' sigil books based on the magic of King Solomon, the famous dude from the Bible. There are spell books that work with the fairy kingdom, with herbs, and with essential oils, which can be used pure or blended for your working.
Like any aspiring cook, aspiring magic workers can use recipes, spells, and rituals developed by other practitioners of their tradition, and of other traditions, over the years. No need to reinvent the wheel. But, as you gain experience, you will likely discover you want to do things your own way. As long as it works and doesn't hurt anyone or anything, including the carpet, that is perfectly okay. Build your basic skills and grow from there. Learn what works for you. And, as you explore what other people have done, you can learn to craft your own spells, rituals, and recipes, which you can record in your own grimoire, your gray book, your book of shadows.
