Moon Magick powdered incense is old school magick.  Made with herbs, resins and essential oils, and on the proper day and phase of the moon, it is the kind you must burn on incense charcoal.

To do this, you need a heat proof dish, such as our brass or pewter burners, incense charcoal, which is self-igniting, and the incense.  A set of tongs and a small spoon are also helpful.

The charcoal comes in little discs with a cavity in one side.  Using the tongs or something else to keep you from burning your fingers, hold the charcoal vertically in the flame of a lighter or candle.  Matches don't work well, as it takes a bit for the charcoal to light.  As the charcoal catches, it will begin to spark.  Once the sparks go all the way across, place it divot side up on the grate of your incense burner, which you also want divot side up, or on some sand in a cauldron or other heat resistant burner such as a small cast iron pan or heavy ceramic bowl.  If you use ceramic, make sure the charcoal doesn't get near the edges or bottom of the bowl as the heat can break the burner.

Place about 1/4 teaspoon, the size of a baby spoon, of incense into the divot on the charcoal.  Once this burns down, you can add more until the charcoal burns out.  Don't put more than this small amount at a time on the coal.  Not unlike us, it needs oxygen to function, and too much incense or herb can suffocate it.

Charcoals can be broken in half or in quarters if you need less burn time.  If you are using the incense for a short ritual, this may be the case.  You can also burn the coal for a longer duration for meditation or longer workings.

The charcoal will eventually burn out on its own, or putting a tight fitting, heat proof lid over the burner will deprive it of oxygen and suffocate it.

Powdered incense makes a lot of smoke.  Disable smoke detectors or burn outside to avoid surprise noises or possible visits by the nice firemen.  Also exercise caution when using around pets, infants, or those with allergies or smoke sensitivities.

Be sure to store your charcoal in a moisture resistant container such as a glass jar or a tea or candy tin. Charcoal will absorb moisture from the air and become hard to light. If this happens, add a little uncooked rice. (Don't eat the rice after you use it for this!)

Moon Magick incenses are made in many varieties for zodiac signs, the planets, deities from around the world, and for various purposes including love, money, meditation, health, and protection.  Using these adds a whole new depth and breadth to your magical practice.
