Shields Up!

The lady at the store told me to always shield when I go out in public. I can't exactly wear plate armor, so what precisely should I do?

Shielding is creating an energetic force field around your body and aura. There are many visualizations to do this, and you must always practice good energy and auric hygiene as a baseline for psychic protection.

Start by eating right and exercising. This helps your energy body as well as your physical body stay healthy and strong. Try to get enough sleep, and don't dwell on problems, yours or those of the world. Do what you can to fix them, then let it go and move on. Also avoid addictions or obsessions of any kind, whether they involve alcohol, drugs, Oreos, or the X-Men franchise. You don't have to go all Marie Kondo, but keep your house or apartment reasonably neat and clean, and avoid being the next episode of Hoarders.

To create your energetic shield, it helps to conceptualize and visualize the energy field that exists around your body just because you are a being on this plane of existence. Most people see it as a band of light that reaches six to twelve inches out from the skin, all around the physical body. Some people envision it as akin to the shields on the Starship Enterprise, NCC-1701. Others perceive theirs as a giant glowing egg. All are appropriate.

To experience your energy field, sit quietly in a dimly lit or dark room. Play soft music if you desire. Take three deep breaths, in and out. Sit with your eyes open, but don't focus on anything. Breathe in, counting from 1 to 10, hold your breath and count to 4, then breathe out, counting down from 10 to 1. Hold for a 4 count, then repeat. Do this until you feel your shoulders and your entire body release the tension you have been carrying. Pay attention to each part of your body, and how it feels, starting with the top of your head, and working to the soles of your feet. Continue the breathing and counting. When you get to your feet, now repeat the inventory from bottom to top, but feeling outside yourself - the air around you, and the faint electric tingle on your skin. That tingle is your energy field.

Explore the limits of the field. Everyone has a natural thickness. If yours seems too thin for comfort, imagine it getting larger, blowing up like a balloon. Imagine the balloon surrounding you filling with golden light which is protective, holding others' energy out and yours in. Continue the breathing practice as you imagine the golden light surrounding you in a golden shield of protection.

Now, still breathing in for 10, hold for 4, out for 10, hold for 4, return your awareness to your physical body. Feel the shield protecting your energetic body like plate armor would protect your physical body. Keep your shield with you when you go into the world, interact with trying household members, or doom scroll on the interwebs.

Letting things get to you in any way, whether forming too close an attachment to an unhealthy vice, worrying too much about things outside your control, or in any way giving away your energy to someone or something that doesn't return it can weaken your shields. At least once a week until it becomes unconscious or whenever you anticipate being in a draining situation, repeat the meditation exercise and recharge your shields, whether you choose to see yours as a Star Trek force field, a big blue egg, or a golden balloon around your energy and physical bodies.

(If you choose force field or egg, do the same meditation, but substitute your vision of proper shields for the balloon I used.)
