Brooms, also called besoms, are used magically for clearing energy, whether by symbolically, and literally, sweeping it out the door, or by ceremonies such as Jumping the Broom in which a married couple jumps over a broom as part of their wedding.  You can make your own magical broom in just a few steps.

You will need a stick, such as a tree branch or a broomstick or dowel from the hardware store, some straw such as longer grass, especially ornamentals such as pampas grass, and any additions such as herbs or oils you want to use.  You also might want to set some stones into the broomstick, or, if it has a hole, add a charm such as a pentagram or an animal charm.

Use jeweler's glue to add the stones, making divots for them with a Dremel or other carving tool.  Sand any rough spots so it doesn't hurt your hands, and apply paint or varnish as desired.  You may also paint sigils, such as protection runes, dragon language, or pentagrams on the broomstick.

To add the bristles, trim your grasses to a somewhat uniform length.  Add sprigs of lavender, rosemary, thyme, or other woody herbs.  Using organic string, such as kitchen twine, tie the straw and herbs into bundles about a quarter inch across up to the size of your pinky finger.  Tie them into a sort of grass skirt for your broom bristles.

There are two ways to do the next step. For a more rustic look, wrap the bundles clockwise around the broomstick with the cut end toward the top of the broom.  Wrap your string around the bristles nine times, clockwise, very tightly and tie it off.  Do this in three layers, pulling as tightly as you can to hold the straw to the broom.  You can add Elmer's or other natural glue to help hold the straw.

For a more finished look, soak the grass skirt in water overnight to make the straw flexible.  Wrap it around the broomstick with the cut ends down, away from the top of the broom.  Wrap your string nine times clockwise around the bristles and tie very tightly.  Now fold the wet bristles down so they are away from the top, and tie them on with the three layers of string as above.

You can use colored string, including using food coloring to dye kitchen twine.

You can put essential oils on your broom for some added magic and scent.  Cinnamon for prosperity, rosemary for protection, lavender for relaxation are some ideas.

Leave the tops on the straw and the edges rough for a rustic appearance or trim the edges evenly for a more tailored, modern look.  Hang your broom on your kitchen wall for domestic harmony, to keep the bad vibes out, or use it in ritual for cleansing.  Sweep that bad energy right out your back door!
